I. Purpose of Survey
The purpose of the “Opinion Survey on Integration of Syrians in Türkiye and Lebanon (2022)” is: a) to understand the current situation and awareness of the Syrians living in Türkiye and Lebanon, as well as that of Turkish and Lebanese communities, and b) to evaluate the possibility of integration between Syrians and the Turkish and Lebanese communities. Survey preparation and data collection for the survey were carried out in collaboration with Çiçekli Araştırma in Türkiye and Statistics Lebanon in Lebanon.
II. Method of Survey
1. Survey Schedule
The survey schedule is as follows:
-
- September – October 2022: Preparation of a draft of the questionnaire.
- October 10, 2022: Finalization of the questionnaire for use in Türkiye.
- November 10, 2022: Finalization of the questionnaire for use in Lebanon.
- October 15 to November 18, 2022: Field survey conducted in Türkiye.
- November 14 to December 1, 2022: Field survey conducted in Lebanon.
- March 8, 2023: Database available for analysis compiled after data cleaning and coding.
2. Questionnaire
Taking into account that integration is a two-way multidimensional process that depends on the context and is based on various interrelated factors (see Jenny Phillimore “Refugee-Integration-Opportunity Structures: Shifting the Focus From Refugees to Context,” Journal of Refugee Studies, 34 (2), June 2021, pp. 1946–1966; Alastair Ager and Alison Strang, “Understanding Integration: A Conceptual Framework,” Journal of Refugee Studies, 21 (2), June 2008, pp. 166–191), the questionnaire was developed by Aoyama and Alahmad from September to October 2022 based on the following researches:
-
- Ziad Alahmad and Hiroyuki Aoyama, “Report of Simple Tally of “Opinion Survey for Syrian and Turkish Communities in Türkiye (Gaziantep, 2022)”” (CMEPS-J Report No. 61), May 24, 2022.
- Kohei Imai, Yutaka Takaoka Shingo Hamanaka, Kota Suechika, Aiko Nishikida, Dai Yamao, Masaki Mizobuchi and Hiroyuki Aoyama, “Report of Simple Tally of “Middle East Public Opinion Survey (Syrian Refugees in Türkiye 2019)” (CMEPS-J.net Report No. 52), January 24, 2020.
In principle, the content of the questionnaires was the same for Syrians living in Türkiye and Lebanon, as well as for the Turkish and Lebanese communities. However, certain questions were slightly modified or removed depending on the circumstances of the survey site after consultation with Çiçekli Araştırma and Statistics Lebanon to confirm the suitability and validity of the content. The questionnaire for use in Türkiye was finalized on October 10, and the questionnaire for use in Lebanon was finalized on November 10.
After finalizing the questionnaires, the forms were deployed on KoboToolbox, and several pre-tests were conducted to confirm the feasibility of data collection.
The questionnaire consisted of the following three sections:
-
- Section 1. Introduction: An introductory section to explain the purpose of the survey to the participants and to obtain their consent before starting the interview.
- Section 2. Bio Data: Consisting of 32 questions regarding basic information such as the background of the interviewees.
- Section 3. Questions: Consisting of 29 questions about the living conditions of the interviewees, their perception about the other community.
3. Survey Sites
Two survey sites in Türkiye and Lebanon were selected carefully to give a good representation of the countries taking into consideration the following factors: presence of Syrians, proximity to Syria, religious/sectarian affiliation, and political loyalty. As a result, Gaziantep Governorate and Izmir Governorate were selected in Türkiye, while North Governorate, and the Beirut Governorate, along with its surrounding areas (known as Greater Beirut) were chosen in Lebanon.
4. Sampling Method
The sample size for each site was determined to be 500 based on a larger sample size than the minimum ideal sample on a 95% confidence interval and 5% margin of error for each site. To ensure representativeness, 20 neighborhoods were randomly selected in each site, taking into account the presence of Syrians, the socio-economic status, and religions/sects.
In the chosen neighborhoods, five streets were randomly selected using a Kish table. Ten interviews (five from the Syrian community and five from the host) were completed in each street through a random walk, taking gender and age into consideration. A total of 2,000 samples were collected in Lebanon (1,000 Syrians and 1,000 Lebanese) and 2,191 in Türkiye (1,076 Syrians and 1,115 Turks).
5. Interview Method
Individual personal interviews were conducted in Arabic with Syrians and Lebanese and in Turkish with Turks.
In each neighborhood, two data collectors were recruited (one Syrian and one host), who had completed high school education and had prior experience in social research were recruited for each neighborhood. The survey teams were trained in using KoboToolbox, interview skills, and obtaining consent.
The collected data were cleaned and coded in collaboration with Çiçekli Araştırma and Statistic Lebanon. All results were entered into SPSS, constituting one database for analysis purposes.
